Samuel Pierpont Langley experimented a lot with aeromechanics in the late 1800s, notably in order to make human flights conceivable. He was well-funded at the time, with a total of $70,000 (1898) from the defense industry and the Smithsonian Institution, which is now worth a stunning $2,424,732.53; consider it a pre-seed fund.

The press worked tirelessly to provide him with just enough coverage to divert his attention away from the work he should have been doing, allowing him to fail miserably enough to never be able to develop a piloted human flight system. Instead,, the Wright brothers were devoting time and effort in their bicycle business to developing the first manned ‘aeromechanic,’ as they called it at the time.
There was minimal news coverage, and they didn’t have much cash aside from the proceeds from their bicycle business. They needed to show themselves that the product was functional. Yes, it eventually worked, and their work is still standing today, laying the groundwork for current manned and unmanned aviation systems.

There is a distinction to be made between making noise and actually working.
Make a fuss and let the world know when you’ve created work that is self-sustaining and keeps you truly always winning. Otherwise, be silent and allow your root to grow to its full depth. It is the wise path to take.
