The first thing you have a chance of becoming is your mentor.

We have the potential to become anything we desire, but the challenge lies in the fact that desire is always shaped by a picture model. While important, this model is merely the starting point — it is the least significant factor in the journey of becoming our better selves.

The most crucial aspect beyond sight is the “HOW.”

Have you ever wondered why success in life isn’t solely determined by strength or beauty? Have you noticed an exceptionally beautiful young lady in the marketplace selling menial goods and thought to yourself, “She has so much potential — why is she here?” Then the next real question is: how can she become more?

The best way to get an inside view of what will become of your life is to check who your mentors are. They are closest thing to what and who you will become.

How do we become? How do you become the person you admire? How do you evolve into your best self and accomplish more in life? The simple yet powerful secret I have discovered is mentorship.

I must admit, I have never been entirely comfortable with the idea of mentorship, nor have I liked being referred to as a mentor. The role comes with significant responsibility — one must maintain a high standard of excellence so that mentees can strive toward and even surpass that benchmark. When they do, even the least among them will achieve extraordinary success.

Fortunately, my habit of learning and constant self-improvement led me to absorb the wisdom of those who have thought and accomplished more than I have. I often mimic those who excel in areas where I seek growth. Although I have rarely submitted to direct guidance, I must acknowledge that the most valuable skills I possess were imparted to me through structured, hands-on mentorship.

If you’re like me, the term “mentor” might challenge your ego, but embracing mentorship is one of the best decisions you can make. Having access to people who have achieved and continue to achieve great things is invaluable. Stagnant individuals will only hinder your progress, and that is a dangerous place to be. Choose to learn, and surround yourself with those who are constantly evolving. Such mentors will be far more humble and effective in guiding you.

Mentors provide a picture of what is possible for you , at the least becoming them first , plus they teach you the how.

There are two fundamental types of mentorship:

  1. Direct Mentorship — This involves person-to-person guidance, where you have access to someone significantly more accomplished than you, and they willingly teach you. The best way to maximize this relationship is by applying their lessons diligently and honoring them, regardless of how successful you eventually become.
  2. Indirect Mentorship — This is the most common form of mentorship, as you may not always have direct access to the individuals you wish to learn from. However, their wisdom is available through books, online resources, and other materials. Your duty is to consume these resources, apply the knowledge, and acknowledge their impact on your success. Publicly recognizing their influence not only honors them but can also open doors for you in the future.

One final and essential point: any mentor whose teachings you do not recognize or respect will never truly benefit you. Honor is the key to fully absorbing their wisdom. If you fail to acknowledge them, you will struggle to recognize the true value of their work.

Choose to learn, grow, and honor those who guide you, and you will unlock your greatest potential. Much more , when next you find someone with potential , point them to a mentor to follow and you will have done them the greatest favour ever.
