In Every Aspect Progress is First Individualistic

Communal progress is most effective and possible when you, as an individual, make progress first — enough to show others how it is done. You can’t force communal progress; many people don’t want to move or even desire to. You cannot help people beyond the extent to which they are willing to help themselves.

You cannot — and should not — force progress on anyone. Instead, focus on your own growth and demonstrate what progress looks like in ways that others can understand. As the saying goes, a great leader knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way. The reality is that you cannot help people succeed beyond their own point of trying. Trying to do so will only drain your resources and waste your efforts.

Your help should meet people at their point of preparation — their readiness to take action and move forward. And when you do help, offer only what they genuinely need, neither more nor less.

It’s natural to want to help others — it’s a human tendency. However, offering help to those who are not receptive or ready can be counterproductive. The worst thing you can do is go out of your way to force progress for someone else, as it will only lead to wasted resources and exhaustion.

The key balance is this: If the help you provide aligns with your own definition of progress and contributes to your personal growth, then it is worthwhile. No matter the resources you invest, you will ultimately be investing in yourself.

You can only assist others in progressing when they have already taken steps on their own.

Likewise, no matter how much others wish to help you, your progress will always begin from where you currently are — not from anywhere else. Your growth depends on your present position and your willingness to advance. If someone pushes you beyond what you are prepared for, you will likely revert to where you were meant to be.

The best way to receive help is to clearly define your needs so that those around you understand them well enough to offer meaningful support.
